I was pleasantly surprised when I started reading this book. I was expecting a “typical” self-help tome but Dan Harris has written an engaging and fun memoir that is very relateable. As an ABC newsman Harris has access to some of the leading self-help gurus and in his quest to become a better man Harris experimented with putting what he learned from them into practice.

What makes this book so compelling is that he is surprisingly candid about his struggles with cocaine, anxiety, panic, and egoism (probably a necessary characteristic for those interested in climbing the ladder in the competitive world of TV news) and appropriately (in my mind) skeptical about what he’s learning. When he describes his first few attempts to meditate there’s probably not a corporate warrior among us who wouldn’t relate to how difficult it was for him to empty his mind. What is inspiring, though, is that he didn’t give up and instead found that consistent meditation practice has made him happier. Definitely recommend for anyone looking for easily accessible stress-relief techniques.
